Review: "An Evening With John Cleese"

Regal Theatre: Perth, Western Australia January 30th 2012.

There was no doubt a high sense of anticipation entering the theatre for last night's audience with comic genius John Cleese. Few performers of our time can be labelled "comic royalty" in the vein of this Monty Python legend. With his ever-lasting affinity for the absurd, Cleese has given so much to the world in his own personal form of 'best medicine'.

In a "This is Your Life" style presentation, Cleese recounted a personal journey, starting with his years growing up in the seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare. Telling the story of his life and career one could not help but feel this was a man blessed with talent and opportunity. He spoke of his parents, his inspiration to become a comedian and of course the origins of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers.

Review: "An Evening With John Cleese"

Much of the material has been heard before and although obviously scripted, delivered by Cleese it remains extemporaneous and amusing. There were plenty of laughs as he described his relationship with his mother who as he recounts was "distant, lacking in maternal instinct and invariably depressed".

In a thoughtfully framed junket of his later life he mused over anecdotes of celebrity peers and personally selected clips from Python and Fawlty Towers. His personal favourite, the battle with the black knight from Monty Python's 'Holy Grail' is amongst them, "come back and I'll bite your legs off!" Cleese's assertion this scene was nearly cut from the movie due to its 'black' nature was one of a number of surprise facts conveyed during the performance.

A sentimental tribute was paid to colleague and co-writer Graham Chapman, including a short video of his dark though extremely amusing funeral eulogy. Particular attention was paid to Chapman's abhorrence of "mindless good behaviour" and his often-public demonstrations that reinforced the fact.

After less than two hours (including a 20 minute interval), it was difficult not to feel disappointed with a performance that sadly lacked new material. Cleese is not shy to the pretence his world tour is selfishly aimed at filling his coffers to cover debts associated with another matrimonial failure. Making no bones of the fact he owes millions to ex-wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger, the ticket price felt like a donation to the cause.

Cleese has described his former wife as the "spiritual godchild of Blackbeard the pirate and Heather Mills". Entering their relationship in 1990 living in a council flat in London with two sons from a previous marriage, Eichelberger exited in 2009 with a reported million. His former spouse surprisingly featured very little in Cleese's routine.

A promised Q & A session at nights end was cut short to just two questions from an eager crowd. The comic master unexpectedly and abruptly absconded from stage leaving the audience understandably mystified. His time owed to a devoted congregation was quite obviously up!

Despite its disappointments, his first solo tour is an essential evenings entertainment for true comedy aficionados of all generations. John Cleese's financial predicament is indeed a boon for Australian comedy fans.

Movie Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked

In 2007, the famous cartoon Alvin and the Chipmunks was converted to the big screen and instantly became a success. Shortly after in 2009, the sequel to the movie was released and it too was a success. In 2010, the producers at 20th Century Fox announced that there would be a third installment of Alvin and the Chipmunks, which would be done in 3D. By reading this movie review, you will get a synopsis of what the third installment of this movie is all about.

Set for a December 2011 release date, Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked is a much awaited American family comedy movie, which stars Jason Lee. The movie has been produced by Bagdasarian Productions and Regency Enterprises, and it will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. As mentioned earlier in this movie review, the new movie follows the movies Alvin and the Chipmunks (released in 2007) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (released in 2009). The actual scheduled release date of the third installment of the movie is December 16, 2011, and unlike the previous two movies, the Motion Picture Association of America has rated Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked "G."

If you had read a movie review for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, you most likely read that the 2009 film was such a masterwork that it was impossible for it be topped. However, thanks to creative minds and the advancement of 3D technology, the December release of the movie's third installment is set to blow everyone out of their seats. Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked promises to be everything and more that The Squeakquel was; however, this time it is done on a boat. There are a number of fans of the cartoon that are eagerly awaiting the release of the movie in December; additionally, they are expecting quite a lot from this movie, as the two before were exceptional.

Finally in this movie review, let us take a look at some of the events that take place in this film. Dave Seville (portrayed by Jason Lee) takes a cruise with The Chipmunks, as well as The Chipettes. From the beginning of the cruise, The Chipettes and The Chipmunks see the cruise as their own personal playground, and are causing trouble wherever they go on the ship. Ultimately, their uncontrolled behavior causes them to become shipwrecked (everyone getting lost), which lands them on the Isles of Scilly. While Dave is trying to find the lost trios, The Chipettes and The Chipmunks finds a castaway that has been on the island; however, the trios seem to have found their match.

Elements of a Good Movie Review

Not all movie reviews are created equal. Some are written excellently. Others are blatant advertising and shameless marketing attempts. Still, there are haphazardly written reviews that are hardly worth your time. How do you decide which ones are good and which ones are not? It depends on several things.

When you consult a film review, consider the following tips.

Take a look at the brief synopsis of the movie review. A film review provides only a brief synopsis of what it is all about. It does not summarize the entire film. You read a review to understand if it is worth watching and not to read about the script! A review would enumerate the whole story in your face.

Elements of a Good Movie Review

A good review analyzes the different aspects of the movie. The review is not all about the acting of the actors and actresses. It is not an extolling of the technical prowess of the film. A good movie review therefore takes a look at all the aspects of the film from the plot, characterization, cinematography, the technical aspect and its overall implications.

A good movie review gives a rating. A good review would give its overall analysis of the movie. It does not sit at the fence and refuse to give its verdict. It cites both the positive and the negative aspects of the film. This way, the review helps the viewers determine the excellence of a film.

A good movie review is a great aid in enhancing your viewing experience. It may not necessarily be a necessity, but surely it helps you understand the film better. It will also help you look out for the best things that a movie offers. It also prepares you to deal with the bad parts of the movie.
